Software: Graduate Diploma Lab

The graduate diploma lab is located on the second floor in the csis building. The lab is used predominaltly by graduate students and students from the languages and computing course course . The graduate diploma lab is off limits to all other computer systems students. The computers in grad dip lab are dual boot machines offering a choice of linux or windows os.The current version of linux is 7.3 although this is regularly updated. There are numerous software packages available under windows. A brief summary is given below.

Visual Studio.NET is a microsoft developement environment. Developers can use Visual Studio.NET to create powerful applications fast and effectively. Visual Studio .NET is the only development environment built from the ground up for XML Web services.

Alchemy CATALYST: Alchemy CATALYST 4.0 is a localisation tool. It combines secure editing environments for XML/XHTML based applications and web sites, advanced contextual translation memory technology and introduces the fastest and most productive mechanism for translating repetitive text segments, all integrated into a single finely tuned project management environment.

HTML QA: The industry standard quality assurance tool for localized Html-based files and projects for Windows 95, 98, 2000 and NT. As with the translation of RTF files, the translation of Html files almost invariably introduces errors which can affect the functioning of the overall documentation system. Such errors include deleted or added links, deleted or added formatting markers, missing graphic references, untranslated text and so forth. HtmlQA performs a complete consistency check across two Html projects to ensure that the localized system functions match the original source project identically.

HTML help Workshop: HTML Help Start Page Microsoft(R) HTML Help is the standard help system for the Windows platform. Authors can use HTML Help to create online help for a software application or to create content for a multimedia title or Web site. Developers can use the HTML Help API to program a host application or hook up context-sensitive help to an application. As an information delivery system, HTML Help is suited for a wide range of applications, including training guides, interactive books, and electronic newsletters, as well as help for software applications. HTML Help offers some distinct advantages over standard HTML, such as the ability to implement a combined table of contents and index and the use of keywords for advanced hyperlinking capability. The HTML Help compiler (part of the HTML Help Workshop) makes it possible to compress HTML, graphic, and other files into a relatively small compiled help (.chm) file, which can then be distributed with a software application, or downloaded from the Web.

Html Help Image Editor: The HTML Help Image Editor is an online graphics tool for creating screen shots; converting, editing, and viewing image files; and browsing thumbnail images for HTML pages.

Robohelp HTML: RoboHelp for HTML Help will produce compiled HTML Help files. What the essentially means is that the help file itself it originally created from a bunch of HTML files, then packaged and compressed (together with the images, TOC etc) into one file CHM file. This CHM file is read by the Microsoft HTML Help engine which ships with IE 4 or above, and is contained on Windows 98 and Windows 2000. HTML Help gives the advantage of greater control over the look and feel of your help file - you can link to other web sites, create DHTML etc.

Macromedia Flash: Macromedia Flash MX is the fastest way to create rich Internet content and applications with a better return on investment. Powerful video, multimedia and application development features allow the creation of rich user interfaces, online advertising, eLearning courses and enterprise application front-ends.

Macromedia director Create rich interactive content that can be deployed anywhere. Macromedia Director Shockwave Studio is a powerful authoring environment for creating compelling interactive experiences that deliver results.

Toolproof is an automatic user interface bug detector for Windows 95, 98, 2000 and NT applications. When ToolProof is running, it continuously scans your application's user interface for common errors and possible interaction problems. These problems include overlapping controls, truncated text within standard controls, and duplicate and missing hitletters. ToolProof is entirely transparent, so you don't need to modify your software testing environment.

Passolo is used to localise Windows software into any foreign language you wish. PASSOLO can handle 32bit applications running under MS Windows 95, 98, NT and even CE. PASSOLO works directly on the EXE-files and is incredibly easy to use.

MS visual Studio 6.0 offers a wide range of features and tools designed specifically to support team-based application development efforts, including teams that are geographically dispersed. The distributed Web project model uses HTTP for all authoring operations, so that developers working in different locations can collaborate on the creation of sophisticated Web applications. With Visual Component Manager, developers can find, track, catalog, and reuse components more easily than ever before. For better version control, Microsoft Visual SourceSafeŽ 6.0 provides complete code source control and file-locking features for team development projects from any tool within the Visual Studio development suite.Equally important, Visual Studio 6.0 can increase developer efficiency and reduce application development time. Developers can use a familiar, shared development environment and the programming languages they already know. Prebuilt components, programming wizards, and the ability to reuse components written in any language can cut the development cycle time significantly. IntelliSenseŽ-based code completion enables developers to produce accurate code more quickly. Finally, powerful end-to-end, cross-language debugging support, coupled with cross-language debugging, helps development teams get applications up and running more rapidly. The results: greater flexibility and lower cost of ownership for companies of all sizes.

Select Component Manager helps designers and developers manage, publish and reuse components, speeding delivery of high quality applications and leveraging IT assets.

Xelda is tool developed by Xerox, which provides a number of facilities for the linguistic analysis of text. The version licenced by the college can tokenise and apply part-of-speech tagging to a variety of European languages.
